01
What is Gunn IMS?
Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) is a specialized dry needling technique used to treat chronic muscle tightness, spasm, and pain associated with nerve irritation and muscle shortening.
Using fine needles inserted into targeted muscles, treatment aims to reduce muscle tension, improve mobility, and restore more comfortable movement. IMS is a tool, tailored to each patient’s thorough assessment, and will be incorporated into a comprehensive physical therapy treatment program.

What injuries does IMS acupuncture help?
- Neck and low back pain that keeps coming back
- Tension headaches and pain from tight upper back and neck muscles
- Shoulder pain and stiffness
- Muscle strains and stubborn trigger points
- Tendon problems such as tennis elbow
- Tightness that limits how you move after an injury
03
What a session feels like
Most people barely feel the needle when it is inserted. When it reaches a tight muscle you may feel a deep ache or a cramping sensation, as the targeted muscle responds. Afterward the area can feel sore for a day or two, like after a hard workout. Some patients experience an immediate sense of relief while others experience a gradual improvement over subsequent treatments.
Your comfort matters. Treatment is individualized and I will explain each step, check in with you and adjust according to your response. Needles are sterile and single use. Needling is never the whole treatment here: it sits inside a plan with manual therapy and exercise, so the improvement is lasting.

Questions
Good to know.
Is Gunn IMS the same as acupuncture?
It uses the same fine, sterile, single-use needles. Gunn IMS targets tight, shortened muscles, often where a nerve has been irritated, and it is guided by a thorough physical therapy assessment.
Does it hurt?
Most people barely feel the needle when it is inserted. When it reaches a tight muscle you may feel a deep ache or a cramping sensation, and the area may be sore for a day or two after.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what we are treating and how long it has been going on. Some patients feel relief right away and others improve gradually over several treatments. After your evaluation I will tell you what I expect and we will adjust as you respond.
Is needling right for everyone?
No. I ask about your health history first, and if needling is not a good fit for you, there are other ways to treat the same problem.
Do you have questions about your injury?
You are welcome to call, text or email to discuss before you book your appointment.
