Jaw pain, treated with the neck in mind.

The temporomandibular joint, the TMJ, is where your jaw meets your skull. When it hurts, clicks or tires when you chew, the neck, posture and tight muscles are often part of the story.

Signs of a TMJ problem

  • Pain in front of the ear or along the jaw
  • Clicking, popping or catching when you open your mouth
  • A jaw that tires or aches when you chew
  • Headaches at the temples
  • Clenching or grinding, especially at night

02

How I treat it

I assess the jaw together with the neck and upper back, because they work as a unit. Treatment can include hands-on manual therapy and soft tissue release of the jaw and neck muscles, mobilization, postural work and specific exercises for the jaw.

If clenching or grinding is part of the picture, I may suggest you also talk with your dentist. We will work together toward a jaw that moves comfortably.

03

Your first visit

  1. 01A 60 to 90 minute evaluation: your history, how the pain started, what makes it better and worse, and a hands-on assessment of how you move.
  2. 02Treatment the same day, so you leave with less pain and a clear understanding of what is going on.
  3. 03A plan built around what matters to you, with a home program you can actually do.

Questions

Good to know.

Can a physical therapist treat TMJ?

Yes. TMJ jaw pain is part of my practice. Physical therapy addresses the joint, the muscles around it and the neck and posture that influence it.

Is jaw pain connected to headaches?

Often. Tight jaw and neck muscles can feed headaches at the temples, so I treat them together.

Do I need a referral?

No. Montana allows direct access to physical therapy, so you can call me directly. It is always wise to check whether your specific insurance requires a physician referral for reimbursement.

How do I make an appointment?

Call or text (406) 871-1751, or email tami.ellis@protonmail.com. Tell me a little about what is going on and when you are free. Visits are by appointment only.
